How To Keep Their Attention

Swimming around in a small plastic bowl all day and night, it’s no wonder that a goldfish has a short attention span. But having all of the information you could imagine right at your fingertips is apparently too much knowledge to keep the average person focused on one thing for too long. Over the years, the brain has adapted to the fast pace of the internet with a shorter attention span than a goldfish and the ability to multitask better than ever. Multitasking might seem like a benefit, but what about when a potential customer is on your site with ten other internet tabs open, and they can’t easily find what they are looking for on your site? Don’t worry, they’re already in a new tab searching where else they can find that type of product or business! The real question you should be asking is, how do I get someone to stay on my website and keep their attention until the end of their experience?

In this fast-paced world of mobile phones and high-speed internet, people know what they want and aren’t going to settle for anything less. So what exactly do you need to do to keep a person interested in your site and purchasing your product or service? Firstly, make sure there are no broken links throughout the site. With such short attention spans and a mind for multitasking, people will have already started a new search in half the time they could have gone back to your website. Next, don’t let people wander aimlessly around your site. You don’t have the time to explain to every web visitor where to go, and they don’t have time to figure it out. Make navigation simple and easy to follow for the people using your site. Lastly, remember that there is an endless amount of websites out there and someone on your website has been on a countless amount of them. Designing your website different than most might help you stand out, but if you go too crazy with a design people will lose interest in trying to figure it out. Humans get used to the way things are, so if you are moving the location of a shopping cart or contact info, no one is going to spend the time finding it.

With attention spans getting shorter and the internet getting more involved in everyday life, it’s essential to have a website that can keep up with the constant changes. A user-friendly and modern website is the only way to keep a potential customer’s attention.
